Manku Thimmana Kagga( DVG)


Life
ತಿರುತಿರುಗಿ ತೊಳಲುವುದು ತಿರಿದನ್ನವುಣ್ಣುವುದು ।
ಮೆರೆದು ಮೈಮರೆಯುವುದು ಹಲ್ಲ ಕಿರಿಯುವುದು ।।
ಮರಳಿ ಕೊರಗಾಡುವುದು ಕೆರಳುವುದು ನರಳುವುದು ।
ಇರವಿದೇನೊಣರಗಳೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

To stray about and tire. To beg and feed oneself.
To brag and act in conceit. To simper and fawn.
To wilt and whine; to be furious; to be miserable:
What is this living but a child's antic! --Mankuthimma
Individualism
ಹರಡುವುದು ಸಾಜ ವಾಯುಗೆ ಸೈಸದದು ತಡೆಯನ್ ।
ಉರುಳಿಪುದದೆಲ್ಲವನು ತಡೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದಿರೆ ।।
ನರನ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರಗತಿಯಂತು ಹಿತಮಿತವಿರಲು ।
ಅರಸೊ ಮಿತಿಯಾಯತಿಯ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

It is natural for wind to blow, it does not tolerate blockage.
But when there is nothing to stop it, it destroys everything.
Such is the nature of individual freedom. It is good if it is
In moderation. Try to limit your independence. --Mankuthimma

 Enlightened
ದ್ವೈತವೇನದ್ವೈತವೇನಾತ್ಮದರ್ಶನಿಗೆ ।
ಶ್ರೌತಾದಿವಿಧಿಯೇನು ತಪನಿಯಮವೇನು ।।
ನೀತಿ ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮಮತಿಯನದರಿನಮಿತ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ।
ಭೀತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದನವನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

What is dualism and non-dualism for the enlightened?
Why rituals, why rules, why meditation?
He is one with all souls, and full of love in his heart.
Fear is unknown to him. --Mankuthimma

Life force
ಬಾನೊಳಿರುವುದೆ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಪಾರ್ವ ದಾರಿಯ ನಕ್ಷೆ ।
ಮೀನು ನೀರೊಳು ನುಸುಳೆ ಪಥನಿಯಮವಹುದೆ ।।
ಏನೊ ಜೀವವನೆಳೆವುದೇನೊ ನೂಕುವುದದನು ।
ನೀನೊಂದು ಗಾಳಿಪಟ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Does the sky have a map for the migrating bird?
Do rules exist for a fish that swims about in water?
Something tugs at life, and pushes it forward:
You are but a flying kite. --Mankuthimma

Resilience
ಎಡವದೆಯೆ ಮೈಗಾಯವಡೆಯದೆಯೆ ಮಗುವಾರು ।
ನಡೆಯ ಕಲಿತವನು ಮತಿನೀತಿಗತಿಯಂತು ।।
ತಡವರಿಸಿ ಮುಗ್ಗರಿಸಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಮತ್ತೆದ್ದು ಮೈ- ।
ದಡವಿಕೊಳುವವರೆಲ್ಲ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Which child learnt to walk without falling down?
This is how the mind learns wisdom too.
To slip, to fall, and to shake oneself and get up:
Isn't this what everyone does? --Mankuthimma

Relationships
ತಂದೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟುದನು ಕಾಣೆಯಾ ।
ಹೊಂದಿರವರವರಹಂತೆಯು ಮೊಳೆಯುವನಕ ।।
ತಂದೆಯಾರ್ ಮಕ್ಕಳಾರ್ ನಾನೆಂಬುದೆದ್ದುನಿಲೆ ।
ಬಂಧ ಮುರಿವುದು ಬಳಿಕ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Have you seen rift between parents and children?
They live in harmony until self-importance takes over.
What of father and what of son, when ego reigns?
Then, the relationship is blighted. --Mankuthimma

Hunger
ಉದರದೈವಕೆ ಜಗದೊಳೆದುರು ದೈವವದೆಲ್ಲಿ ।
ಮೊದಲದರ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಿಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲವದರಿಂದ ।।
ಮದಿಸುವುದದಾದರಿಸೆ ಕುದಿವುದು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸೆ ।
ಹದದೊಳಿರಿಸುವುದೆಂತೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

What God in this world is greater than the Stomach God?
It has to get the first worship; others come afterwards.
If you respect it, it takes over you. If you ignore it, it seethes with rage.
How to keep it at bay? I know not. --Mankuthimma


Immortality
ಹುಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಸಾಯುತಿರೆ ನೆಲ ಸವೆದು ಕರಗುತಿರೆ ।
ಕಡಲೊಳೆತ್ತಲೋ ಹೊಸ ದ್ವೀಪವೇಳುವುದು ।।
ಕಳೆಯುತೊಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆವುದಿನ್ನೊಂದೆಲ್ಲೊ ।
ಅಳಿವಿಲ್ಲ ವಿಶ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Even as a worm lives and dies, and land erodes away,
Somewhere deep in the ocean, a new island emerges.
Something wanes here, something grows elsewhere.
There is no end to this universe. --Mankuthimma

Causality
ಗಗನನೀಲಿಮೆಯೆನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಗೆ ಸೊಗವೀವಂತೆ ।
ಮುಗಿವ ತರಣಿಯ ರಕ್ತ ಹಿತವೆನಿಸದೇಕೊ ।।
ಸೊಗದ ಮೂಲವದೆಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಲದೊಳೊ ಕೆಂಪಿನೊಳೊ ।
ಬಗೆವೆನ್ನ ಮನಸಿನೊಳೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

I am delighted with the azure blue of the sky,
But its evening red does not please me much.
Is the cause of my sensation in blue? Or red?
Or is it in my mind that felt it? --Mankuthimma


Reputation
ಅನ್ನದಾತುರಕಿಂತ ಚಿನ್ನದಾತುರ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣ ।
ಚಿನ್ನದಾತುರಕಿಂತ ಹೆಣ್ಣುಗಂಡೊಲವು ।।
ಮನ್ನಣೆಯ ದಾಹವೀಯೆಲ್ಲಕಂ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣತಮ ।
ತಿನ್ನುವುದದಾತ್ಮವನೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

There is in Man craving for food, but more so for wealth.
There is in Man craving for wealth, but more so for carnal pleasure.
What surpasses even that, however, is craving for reputation:
That devours his soul! --Mankuthimma


Experience
ಅನುಭವದ ಪಾಲೊಳು ವಿಚಾರಮಂಥನವಾಗೆ ।
ಜನಿಯಿಕುಂ ಜ್ಞಾನನವನೀತವದೆ ಸುಖದಂ ।।
ಗಿಣಿಯೋದು ಪುಸ್ತಕಜ್ಞಾನ ನಿನ್ನನುಭವವೆ ।
ನಿನಗೆ ಧರುಮದ ದೀಪ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Your experience is milk. Churn it with your faculty of discretion
To beget the cream of wisdom. That is what makes living pleasurable.
Even parrot can have book-knowledge! Know that your experience alone
Is your guiding light. --Mankuthimma

Samsara
ಅರಿ ಮಿತ್ರ ಸತಿ ಪುತ್ರ ಬಂಧು ಬಳಗವದೆಲ್ಲ ।
ಕರುಮದವತಾರಗಳೊ ಋಣಲತೆಯ ಚಿಗುರೋ ।।
ಕುರಿಯನಾಗಿಸಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಕಾಪಿಡುವ ಸಂಸಾರ ।
ವುರಿಮಾರಿಯಾದೀತೋ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Your enemy, friend, wife, child, your kith and your kin -- these are all
Avatars of your karma. They are the new leaves in your plant of debt. [1]
The samsara that makes you a sheep and protects you
Can be the devil that takes you as sacrifice! --Mankuthimma


Food
ಇಂದು ಮದುವೆಯ ಹಬ್ಬ ನಾಳೆ ವೈಕುಂಠ ತಿಥಿ ।
ಇಂದು ಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ನ ಸುಖ ನಾಳೆ ಭಿಕ್ಷಾನ್ನ ।।
ಇಂದು ಬರಿಯುಪವಾಸ ನಾಳೆ ಪಾರಣೆಯಿಂತು ।
ಸಂದಿರುವುದನ್ನಋಣ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A wedding feast today, a funeral lunch tomorrow.
A lavish treat today, as alms to your begging bowl tomorrow.
A fast today, a feast tomorrow.
Thus does Fate spread your food across many givers. --Mankuthimma


Happiness
ಮೌನದೊಳೊ ಮಾತಿನೊಳೊ ಹಾಸ್ಯದೊಳೊ ಹಾಡಿನೊಳೊ ।
ಮಾನವಂ ಪ್ರಣಯದೊಳೊ ವೀರ ವಿಜಯದೊಳೊ ।।
ಏನೋ ಎಂತೋ ಸಮಾಧಾನಗಳನರಸುತಿಹ ।
ನಾನಂದವಾತ್ಮಗುಣ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

In silence, in gossip, in humour, in music,
So also in love, in bravery and victory;
In all these and more does Man seek peace and joy.
But happiness is within the soul! --Mankuthimma

Old and new
ಹೊಸಚಿಗುರು ಹಳೆಬೇರು ಕೂಡಿರಲು ಮರ ಸೊಗಸು ।
ಹೊಸಯುಕ್ತಿ ಹಳೆತತ್ತ್ವದೊಡಗೂಡೆ ಧರ್ಮ ।।
ಋಷಿವಾಕ್ಯದೊಡನೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಕಲೆ ಮೇಳವಿಸೆ ।
ಜಸವು ಜನಜೀವನಕೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

New leaves and old roots are what makes a tree magnificent.
New knowledge and old principles meld to become dharma.
If wisdom of the sages can blend with the new sciences,
It would be for the benefit the humanity. --Mankuthimma

 Providence
ಋಣದ ಮೂಟೆಯ ಹೊರಿಸಿ ಪೂರ್ವಾ ರ್ಜಿತದ ಹುರಿಯ ।
ಕುಣಿಕೆಯಲಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೊರಳನು ಬಿಗಿದು ವಿಧಿಯು ।।
ತೃಣದ ಕಡ್ಡಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಿಡಿದಾಶೆ ತೋರುತಿರೆ ।
ಕುಣಿವ ಗಾರ್ದಭ ನೀನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A sack of arrears is loaded on its back, tied
To its neck by Providence for its past debts.
And now, as Providence lures it with a blade of grass,
The donkey that is you dances! --Mankuthimma

Kith and kin
ಇಂಗಿತಜ್ಞಾನವಿಲ್ಲದ ಬಂಧು ಪರಿವಾರ ।
ಹಂಗಿಸುವ ಛಲವುಳ್ಳ ಸತಿಪುತ್ರಸಖರು ।।
ಬಂಗಾರದಸಿ ಚುಚ್ಚೆ ಸಿಂಗರದ ಬೊಟ್ಟೆನುವ ।
ಮಂಗಬುದ್ಧಿಯ ಜನರು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Relatives who do not understand your personality,
Family and friends who look upon you with derision;
Are foolish people who would call it pretty
If you pierced your nose with a splinter of gold! --Mankuthimma

Counsel
ವಹಿಸು ಕೆಲ ಭಾರಗಳ ಸಹಿಸು ಕೆಲ ನೋವುಗಳ ।
ಪ್ರಹರಿಸರಿಗಳನಿನಿತು ಯುಕ್ತಗಳನರಿತು ।।
ಮಹಿಯ ನಾಟಕದಿ ನೀಂ ಮನಸಿಟ್ಟು ಕುಣಿಕುಣಿದು ।
ವಿಹರಿಸಾತ್ಮಾಲಯದಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Bear some stress, bear some sorrows,
Biding for time, quash some of your foes.
In this drama called life, always act mindfully;
And revel within yourself. --Mankuthimma

Volatility
ಶ್ವಾನ ತಿಪ್ಪೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಲಗಿರಲು ಪೂರ್ವಿಕ ।
ಜ್ಞಾನ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಾಪ ಶುಭಚಿಂತೆಯಂತೆ ।।
ಏನೊ ವಾಸನೆ ಬೀಸಲದು ಹಾರಿ ಧುಮುಕುವುದು ।
ಮಾನವನ ಮನಸಂತು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A dog that is lying on garbage may happen
To think of its past lives and repent for it.
But when it catches a new smell, it runs after it!
Likewise is this mind. --Mankuthimma

Jealousy
ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯೊಂದರ ರಗಳೆ ಸಾಲದೆಂದೇನೊ ವಿಧಿ ।
ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಕಿಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಿಡಿಯ ನೆಟ್ಟಿಹನು ನರನೊಳ್ ।।
ಹೊಟ್ಟೆತುಂಬಿದ ತೋಳ ಮಲಗೀತು ನೀಂ ಪರರ ।
ದಿಟ್ಟಿಸುತ ಕರುಬುವೆಯೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

As if hunger itself is not vicious enough,
Fate has planted jealousy in Man.
A wolf that has feasted will fall asleep. But
You will look at others and envy them! --Mankuthimma

Advice
ಸರ್ವರುಂ ಸಾಧುಗಳೆ ಸರ್ವರುಂ ಬೋಧಕರೆ ।
ಜೀವನ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಬಂದಿದಿರು ನಿಲುವನಕ ।।
ಭಾವಮರ್ಮಂಗಳೇಳುವವಾಗ ತಳದಿಂದ ।
ದೇವರೇ ಗತಿಯಾಗ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Everyone is a saint, everyone wants to advise:
Until they come to face a crisis in life. Then,
An emotional storm arises from deep within;
God alone is the resort then! --Mankuthimma

Variety
ಗಿಡದಿ ನಗುತಿರುವ ಹೂ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಸಖನಿಗೆ ಚೆಂದ ।
ಮಡದಿ ಮುಡಿದಿರುವ ಹೂ ಯುವಕಂಗೆ ಚೆಂದ ।।
ಗುಡಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಕೊಡುವ ಹೂ ದೆೃವಭಕ್ತಗೆ ಚೆಂದ ।
ಬಿಡಿಗಾಸು ಹೂವಳಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A flower on a plant makes the naturalist happy,
A flower in his wife's braid makes a young man happy,
A flower that bedecks his God makes a devotee happy,
A penny makes the florist happy. --Mankuthimma

Companion
ಕಾರಿರುರೊಳಾಗಸದಿ ತಾರೆ ನೂರಿದ್ದೇನು ।
ದಾರಿಗನ ಕಣ್ಗೆ ಬೇಕೊಂದು ಮನೆಬೆಳಕು ।।
ದೂರದಾ ದೈವವಂತಿರಲಿ ಮಾನುಷಸಖನ ।
ಕೋರುವುದು ಬಡಜೀವ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

So what if the night sky has a million stars?
The weary traveller looks for the lights of a dwelling.
Let alone any divine being, this poor soul
Seeks a bosom friend. --Mankuthimma

Temperance
ಸ್ಮಿತವಿರಲಿ ವದನದಲಿ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಕೇಳಿಸದಿರಲಿ ।
ಹಿತವಿರಲಿ ವಚನದಲಿ ಋತವ ಬಿಡದಿರಲಿ ।।
ಮಿತವಿರಲಿ ಮನಸಿನುದ್ವೇಗದಲಿ ಭೋಗದಲಿ ।
ಅತಿ ಬೇಡವೆಲ್ಲಿಯುಂ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Let there be a soft smile on your face,
Let your speech be truthful and pleasant,
Let there be restraint in emotions, in indulgence;
Let there not be excesses anywhere. --Mankuthimma

Detachment
ಮೃತನ ಸಂಸಾರಕಥೆ ಶವವಾಹಕರಿಗೇಕೆ ।
ಸತಿಯು ಗೋಳಿಡಲಿ ಸಾಲಿಗನು ಬೊಬ್ಬಿಡಲಿ ।।
ಜಿತಮನದಿ ಚಿತಿಗಟ್ಟಿ ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯುತಿಹರವರು ।
ಧೃತಿಯ ತಳೆ ನೀನಂತು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Would the bearers of a dead man bother about his story?
His wife may weep, his moneylender may bawl:
Unperturbed, they simply carry the corpse to its grave.
Develop such dispassion, you too. --Mankuthimma

Brahman
ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹೂದೋಟದಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕೆಳೆಕೂಟದಲಿ ।
ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸಂಗೀತದಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲಿ ।।
ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸಂಸಾರದಲಿ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮೌನದಲಿ ।
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾನುಭವಿಯಾಗೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

In garden of flowers, in gathering of friends,
In music, in knowledge and scholarship,
In family, and in the deep silence of solitude:
Feel the Brahman [1]. --Mankuthimma

The way
ಹೊರಗೆ ಲೋಕಾಸಕ್ತಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಸಕಲ ವಿರಕ್ತಿ ।
ಹೊರಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಧ್ಯಾನವೊಳಗುದಾಸೀನ ।।
ಹೊರಗೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಭಾರವೊಳಗದರ ತಾತ್ಸಾರ ।
ವರಯೋಗಮಾರ್ಗವಿದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Apparently interested in worldly affairs, but internally detached from it all.
Externally immersed in work, but within, disinterest [in its outcome].
On the outside very traditional, but in the heart, indifferent to it.
This is the supreme way for union [with the divine]. --Mankuthimma

Yogi
ಕಾಗೆಯುಂ ಕೋಗಿಲೆಯುವೊಂದೆ ಮೇಲ್ನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ।
ಯೋಗಿಯುಂ ಸಂಸಾರಭೋಗಿಯೇ ಹೊರಕೆ ।।
ಲೋಗರವೊಲಿರುತೆ ಸುಖದುಃಖಸಂಭ್ರಮಗಳಲಿ ।
ತ್ಯಾಗಿಯವನಂತರದಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The crow and cuckoo look much the same;
The yogi also appears to pamper himself much.
But although amidst people, in joys and sorrows,
He is tranquil within. --Mankuthimma

Bond
ಪ್ರೇಮಾತಿಶಯವಿರದ ದಾಂಪತ್ಯ ವರ್ಧಿಸದು ।
ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹಕೆಡೆಗೊಟ್ಟೊಡದು ನಿಗಳವಹುದು ।।
ಸಾಮರಸ್ಯವನೆಂತು ಕಾಣ್ಬುದೀ ವಿಷಮದಲಿ ।
ಆಮಿಷದ ತಂಟೆಯಿದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Without surfeit of love, marriage will not prosper.
But if love turns to attachment, bond becomes a bondage.
Between these opposites, how shall I bring accord?
It is a game of temptation. --Mankuthimma

Upliftment
ಎದ್ದೆದ್ದು ಬೀಳುತಿಹೆ ಗುದ್ದಾಡಿ ಸೋಲುತಿಹೆ ।
ಗದ್ದಲವ ತುಂಬಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧನಾಗುತಿಹೆ ।।
ಉದ್ಧರಿಸುವೆನು ಜಗವನೆನ್ನುತಿಹ ಸಖನೆ ನಿ ।
ನ್ನುದ್ಧಾರವೆಷ್ಟಾಯ್ತೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

You are having many falls, you are losing the fight.
Your fame is all noise and commotion.
My friend, you are saying you will uplift the world,
But what about yourself? --Mankuthimma

Live on
ದಿವಸದಿಂ ದಿವಸಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಮಿಷದಿಂ ನಿಮಿಷಕ್ಕೆ ।
ಭವಿಷಿಯವ ಚಿಂತಿಸದೆ ಬದುಕ ನೂಕುತಿರು ।।
ವಿವರಗಳ ಜೋಡಿಸುವ ಯಜಮಾನ ಬೇರಿಹನು ।
ಸವೆಸು ನೀಂ ಜನುಮವನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Day to day, moment to moment,
Live on, without worrying about the future.
There is a Master to fit in the detail;
You only need to endure. --Mankuthimma

Counsel
ಇರುವ ಕೆಲಸವ ಮಾಡು ಕಿರಿದೆನದೆ ಮನವಿಟ್ಟು ।
ದೊರೆತುದ ಹಸಾದವೆಂದುಣ್ಣು ಗೊಣಗಿಡದೆ ।।
ಧರಿಸು ಲೋಕದ ಭರವ ಪರಮಾರ್ಥವನು ಬಿಡದೆ ।
ಹೊರಡು ಕರೆ ಬರಲಳದೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Work with all your mind, without belittling what you do.
Eat whatever you get as god's gift, without complaint.
Wear on the garb of a mortal, without leaving the spiritual.
When the call comes, pass on without tears. --Mankuthimma

Mountain out of mole hill
ತರಚುಗಾಯವ ಕೆರೆದು ಹುಣ್ಣನಾಗಿಪುದು ಕಪಿ ।
ಕೊರತೆಯೊಂದನು ನೀನು ನೆನೆನೆನೆದು ಕೆರಳಿ ।।
ಧರೆಯೆಲ್ಲವನು ಶಪಿಸಿ ಮನದಿ ನರಕವ ನಿಲಿಸಿ ।
ನರಳುವುದು ಬದುಕೇನೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A monkey scratches a graze and turns it into a wound.
Worrying yourself to no end over an imperfection,
Cursing everything and making your mind a hell:
Is this misery a life too? --Mankuthimma

Belief
ನಂಬು ದೇವರ ನಂಬು ನಂಬೆನ್ನುವುದು ಲೋಕ ।
ಕಂಬನಿಯನಿಡುವ ಜನ ನಂಬಲೊಲ್ಲದರೇಂ ।।

They ask me to believe and trust in God.
Are the people in sorrow disbelievers, then?
What is the need for belief if you have no desire?

ಮಾರನಂ ದಂಡಿಸಿರೆ ಗೌರಿಯಿಂ ಭಯವೇನು ।
ಚಾರು ಸಹಕಾರಿಯವಳೆಂದು ಶಿವನೊಲಿದನ್ ।।
ಮೀರೆ ಮೋಹವನು ಸಂಸಾರದಿಂ ಭಯವೇನು ।
ದಾರಿ ಕೆಳೆಯದು ನಿನಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

If you can keep Cupid at bay, why dread Woman?
Siva married Parvati as a friend and companion. [1]
If you are beyond attachment, you need not fear marriage.
It is your friend as you tread the path of life. -Mankuthimma


Nature
ಕಣ್ಗೆರಡದೇಕೆರಡುಮೊಂದೆ ಪಕ್ಕದೊಳೇಕೆ ।
ಬೆನ್ನೊಳೊಂದೆದೆಯೊಳೊಂದಿರಲು ಸುಕರವಲ ।।
ಅನ್ಯಾಯ ವಿಕಟಂಗಳೆನಿತೊ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕ್ರಮದಿ ।
ಸೊನ್ನೆ ಜನವಾಕ್ಕಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Why do we have our eyes next to each other?
Wouldn't it be better if we had one each on our back and chest?
Many are the injustices and travesties in Nature.
People's opinion does not matter to Her. --Mankuthimma

 Labour
ಅಗೆದು ಗೊಬ್ಬರವಿಕ್ಕಿ ನೀರೆರೆದು ತೋಟಿಗನು ।
ಜಗಿವ ಮುಳ್ಳಿರಿತಗಳ ಸೈರಿಸೆ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ।।
ನಗುವುದೊಂದರೆ ನಿಮಿಷ ನಗಲು ಬಾಳ್ಮುಗಿಯುವುದು ।
ಮುಗುಳು ದುಡಿತಕೆ ತಣಿಸು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A gardener has to dig, throw manure and water,
And tolerate its thorns to see a rose bloom
Only for a moment. Then it withers away.
But the blossom absolves all his toil. --Mankuthimma

Stomach
ಹೊಟ್ಟೆರಾಯನ ನಿತ್ಯದಟ್ಟಹಾಸವೊ ಬಾಳು ।
ಧೃಷ್ಟಧಣಿಯೂಳಿಗಕೆ ಸೊಟ್ಟು ಮೈಬಾಗು ।।
ಹಿಟ್ಟಿಗಗಲಿದ ಬಾಯಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗೊಡ್ಡಿದ ಕೈಯಿ ।
ಇಷ್ಟೆ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲ ಕಥೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Life is a tyranny of the Stomach King.
We bend over and work to be fed by cruel masters.
A mouth open for bread, a hand held across for clothing:
Isn't this all our tales? --Mankuthimma

Argument
ಫಲವಿಲ್ಲ ಕಾರ್ಯಕಾರಣವಾದದಿಂ ತತ್ತ್ವ ।
ಸಿಲುಕದೆಮ್ಮಯ ತರ್ಕಕರ್ಕಶಾಂಕುಶಕೆ ।।
ಸುಳಿವುದಾಗೀಗಳದು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಾನುಭವಗಳಲಿ ।
ತಿಳಿಮನದಿ ನೋಳ್ಪರ್ಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

There is no use debating on cause and effect,
For wisdom does not fall into the coarse trap of logic.
In intense experiences does it gleam, sometimes,
And to the beginner's mind. --Mankuthimma

Knowing
ಅಜ್ಞಾತವಾದುದನಭಾವವೆನೆ ನಾಸ್ತಿಕನು ।
ಅಜ್ಞೇಯವೆಂದದಕೆ ಕೈಮುಗಿಯೆ ಭಕ್ತ ।।
ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸ್ಯವೆಂದು ಪರಿಕಿಸತೊಡಗೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ ।
ಸ್ವಜ್ಞಪ್ತಿಶೋಧಿ ಮುನಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The Unknown is considered absent by the atheist.
The devotee venerates It as Unknowable.
The scientist probes It as something to be known.
But the sage reflects on what he knows. --Mankuthimma

Pleasures
ಸಾಕುಸಾಕೆನಿಸುವುದು ಲೋಕಸಂಪರ್ಕಸುಖ ।
ಸೋಕಿದೆಡೆ ತುರಿಯನೆಬ್ಬಿಸುವ ತುರುಚಿಯದು ।।
ಮೂಕನವೆ ತುರಿಸದಿರೆ ತುರಿಯುತಿರೆ ಹುಣ್ಣುರಿತ ।
ಮೂಕನಪಹಾಸ್ಯವಿದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Worldly pleasures seem so very tiring,
Like the allergic weed that itches on contact.
It itches if you don't scratch, but it hurts if you do.
It is like mocking a dumb man. --Mankuthimma

Craving
ಬೇಕು ಬೇಕದು ಬೇಕು ಬೇಕಿದೆನಗಿನ್ನೊಂದು ।
ಬೇಕೆನುತ ಬೊಬ್ಬಿಡುತಲಿಹ ಘಟವನಿದನು ।।
ಏಕೆಂದು ರಚಿಸಿದನೊ ಬೊಮ್ಮನೀ ಬೇಕು ಜಪ ।
ಸಾಕೆನಿಪುದೆಂದಿಗೆಲೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

More, more, more of this, more of that.
Why did He create this drum of a body
That screams "More" all the time?
When will it say "No more"? --Mankuthimma

Children
ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಕ್ಕುಲಿತಗೊಳಬೇಡ ।
ಪಕ್ಕಾಗುವುದು ಭಾಗ್ಯವೆಂತೆಂತೊ ಜಗದಿ ।।
ದಕ್ಕಿತೇಂ ಕುರುಪಾಂಡುತನಯರ್ಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಸುಖ ।
ದಿಕ್ಕವರಿಗವರವರೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Do not fret over your children's future.
There are many ways for luck to knock their door.
Did Kauravas or Pandavas get to enjoy kingship? [1]
One alone is responsible for oneself. --Mankuthimma

Rebuilding
ಬಿದ್ದುದನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಪುದೆ ನರನ ಮೃತ್ಯುಂಜಯತೆ ।
ಶುದ್ಧಿಸದೆ ನಭ ಧರೆಯ ಮರಮರಳಿ ಮಳೆಯಿಂ ।।
ಗದ್ದೆ ಕೊಯ್ಲಾಗೆ ಮಗುಳ್ದದು ಬೆಳೆಯ ಕೊಡದಿಹುದೆ ।
ಬಿದ್ದ ಮನೆಯನು ಕಟ್ಟೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Man's immortality is in rebuilding what has been razed.
Does not the sky clean the earth again and again with rain?
Does not the earth give a new crop after harvest?
Reconstruct your fallen house! --Mankuthimma

Primeval traits
ಕ್ಲೇಶ ನೂರಾಗಿರೆಯುಮಾಶೆಗಳ ಪುನರುದಯ ।
ಬೇಸರದ ನುಡಿಯೊಳಂ ಲೇಸುಗಳ ನೆನಪು ।।
ಆಶೆ ಸಾಯ್ತೆಂದೊಡಂ ಚೆಲುವೆನಲು ಕಣ್ಣಲೆತ ।
ಮಾಸವೀ ಜೀವಗುಣ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Even amid a hundred troubles, renewed cravings!
Amidst words of scorn, memories of happier times!
Even on death bed, lustful eyes that seek beauty!
These primordial instincts perish not. --Mankuthimma

Devotion
ಕತ್ತಲೆಯೊಳೇನನೊ ಕಂಡು ಬೆದರಿದ ನಾಯಿ ।
ಎತ್ತಲೋ ಸಖನೋರ್ವನಿಹನೆಂದು ನಂಬಿ ।।
ಕತ್ತೆತ್ತಿ ಮೋಳಿಡುತ ಬೊಗಳಿ ಹಾರಾಡುವುದು ।
ಭಕ್ತಿಯಂತೆಯೆ ನಮದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Having seen something in darkness, and being afraid,
And believing that there is a friend somewhere,
The dog howls, barks, and runs about restlessly.
Likewise is our piety. --Mankuthimma

Conscience
ಧರ್ಮಸಂಕಟದಿ ಮನ ತಲ್ಲಣಿಸುತಿರುವಂದು ।
ನಿರ್ಮಥಿಸು ನಿನ್ನಾತ್ಮವನೆ ಮಮತೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ।।
ನಿರ್ಮಮದ ಸದ್ವಿವೇಕದ ದೀಪಕಿಂತ ನೀಂ ।
ನೆಮ್ಮಲಿನ್ನೇನಿಹುದೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

When your mind is perplexed with ethical dilemma,
Introspect yourself with dispassion.
What else but the light of conscience,
Can you depend upon? --Mankuthimma

Foursome
ಹೋರಾಡು ಬೀಳ್ವನ್ನಮೊಬ್ಬೊಂಟಿಯಾದೊಡಂ ।
ಧೀರಪಥವನೆ ಬೆದಕು ಸಕಲಸಮಯದೊಳಂ ।।
ದೂರದಲಿ ಗೊಣಗುತ್ತ ಬಾಳ್ವ ಬಾಳ್ಗೇನು ಬೆಲೆ ।
ಹೋರಿ ಸತ್ತ್ವವ ಮೆರಸು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Fight, even if you are alone and falling.
Look for the brave path at all times.
What worth is a life spent grumbling?
Be like the fighter ram! --Mankuthimma


ತನ್ನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನಳೆದು ತನ್ನ ಗುಣಗಳ ಬಗೆದು ।
ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶದ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವನರಿತು ಧೃತಿದಳೆದು ।।
ತನ್ನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಪರಿಧಿಯ ಮೀರದುಜ್ಜುಗಿಸೆ ।
ಪುಣ್ಯಶಾಲಿಯ ಪಾಡು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Weighing one's strengths and weaknesses,
Considering the gravity of the situation, and resolute,
And without crossing one's limits, --if one works,
Blessed indeed is he. --Mankuthimma


ಜಟ್ಟಿ ಕಾಳಗದಿ ಗೆಲ್ಲದೊಡೆ ಗರಡಿಯ ಸಾಮು ।
ಪಟ್ಟುವರಸೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ವಿಫಲವೆನ್ನುವೆಯೇಂ ।।
ಮುಟ್ಟಿನೋಡವನ ಮೈಕಟ್ಟು ಕಬ್ಬಿಣ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ।
ಗಟ್ಟಿತನ ಗರಡಿ ಫಲ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

If a wrestler loses in a fight, would you call
His exercises in the gym fruitless?
Touch him; his muscles are strong as iron.
Strength is the fruit of his labour. --Mankuthimma


ಜಗವೆನ್ನ ಮುದ್ದಿಸದದೇಕೆಂದು ಕೊರಗದಿರು ।
ಮಗುವು ಪೆತ್ತರ್ಗೆ ನೀಂ ಲೋಕಕೆ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿ ।।
ಹೆಗಲಹೊರೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರ್ಗೆಲ್ಲಮಿರುತಿರೆ ನಿನ್ನ ।
ರಗಳೆಗಾರಿಗೆ ಬಿಡುವೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Gripe not that nobody cares for you:
You are a baby for your parents; for others you are another competitor.
When everyone in this world has a burden to carry,
Who wants to hear your grouse? --Mankuthimma

Twosome
ಇಳೆಯಿಂದ ಮೊಳಕೆಯೊಗೆವಂದು ತಮಟೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ।
ಫಲ ಮಾಗುವಂದು ತುತ್ತೂರಿ ದನಿಯಿಲ್ಲ ।।
ಬೆಳಕೀವ ಸೂರ್ಯಚಂದ್ರರದೊಂದು ಸದ್ದಿಲ್ಲ ।
ಹೊಲಿ ನಿನ್ನ ತುಟಿಗಳನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A new plant sprouts from a seed, without any fanfare.
A flower ripens into a fruit without any trumpet call.
Sun and moon shine on earth without any commotion:
Open not your mouth [in self-praise]. --Mankuthimma


ಬರುವೆಲ್ಲ ಬೇನೆಗಂ ಮದ್ದನಾರಿರಿಸಿಹರು ।
ನರರ ಕೀಳ್ತನಕೆಲ್ಲ ಪರಿಹಾರವೆಂತು ।।
ಕಿರಿದು ಪಲ್ಲನು ತಾಳಿಕೊಳಲೆಬೇಕಷ್ಟಿಷ್ಟು ।
ಧರೆಯಂತರುಷ್ಣವನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Who has come up with medicine for every malady?
What can cease the many vulgarities of people?
One only has to grin and bear some of it,
Just as the earth holds its hot core. --Mankuthimma

Ageing
ರವಿ ನಿಲದೆ ಸುತ್ತುತಿರೆ ಕೊರಗು ಕಳವಳವೇಕೊ ।
ಸವೆಯಿಸುತಲೆಲ್ಲವನು ಕಡೆಗೊಯ್ವನವನು ।।
ಕವಳಿಸುವುದೆಲ್ಲವನು ಮರೆವು ಬಾಳೊಳದೊಂದು ।
ಶಿವಕೃಪೆಯ ಲಕ್ಷಣವೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

When the sun comes up everyday without fail, why worry?
He ages everything and takes it away in the end.
Memory fails in us, gobbling up one and all. It is
Such a good thing in life! --Mankuthimma

 Experience
ಅತ್ಯಂತದುತ್ಕಟದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳ ಭರ ।
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷದರ್ಶನದಿನಲ್ಲದೆಂತಹುದು ।।
ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಚಿತ್ರದಿಂದೂಹಿಪೆಯ ಹಿಮಗಿರಿಯ ।
ವಿಸ್ತಾರದದ್ಭುತವ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The intensity of profound situations
Cannot be felt but by experience.
Can you look at a picture and make out
The glory of Himalayas? --Mankuthimma

Loneliness
ಒರ್ವನೇ ನಿಲುವೆ ನೀನುತ್ಕಟಕ್ಷಣಗಳಲಿ ।
ಧರ್ಮಸಂಕಟಗಳಲಿ ಜೀವಸಮರದಲಿ ।।
ನಿರ್ವಾಣದೀಕ್ಷೆಯಲಿ ನಿರ್ಯಾಣಘಟ್ಟದಲಿ ।
ನಿರ್ಮಿತ್ರನಿರಲು ಕಲಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Alone will you be in heartfelt moments,
In ethical dilemmas, in the battle of life,
In enlightenment, on your way to grave.
Learn to be without friends. --Mankuthimma

Twosome again
ಶರನಿಧಿಯನೀಜುವನು ಸಮರದಲಿ ಕಾದುವನು ।
ಗುರಿಯೊಂದನುಳಿದು ಪೆರತೊಂದ ನೋಡುವನೆ ।।
ಮರೆಯುವನು ತಾನೆಂಬುದನೆ ಮಹಾವೇಶದಲಿ ।
ನಿರಹಂತೆಯದು ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The swimmer who crosses the sea, the soldier at war:
Does not see anything but his goal.
He forgets himself in his effort to achieve his aim.
That is liberation. --Mankuthimma

ಸತ್ತೆವೆನ್ನಾಶೆಗಳು ಗೆದ್ದೆನಿಂದ್ರಿಯಗಣವ ।
ಚಿತ್ತವಿನ್ನಲುಗದೆಂಬಾ ಜಂಭ ಬೇಡ ।।
ಎತ್ತಣಿಂದಲೋ ಗಾಳಿ ಮೋಹಬೀಜವ ತಂದು ।
ಬಿತ್ತಲಾರದೆ ಮನದಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

"My desires are gone, I've won my senses,
My mind will waver not." --brag not like that.
Can not the wind, from somewhere, bring
A seed of temptation and sow it in you? --Mankuthimma

Fingers
ಬೆರಳುಗಳ ನೋಡವುಗಳೊಂದರಂತೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ ।
ಕರಧರ್ಮಕುಚಿತವಾ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಡಮೆಗಳು ।।
ಪುರುಳ ಪಿಡಿವುವೆ ಬೆರಳ್ಗಳೆಲ್ಲಮೊಂದುದ್ದವಿರೆ ।
ಸರಿಯಹುದು ಕಾರ್ಯದಲಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Look at your fingers, no two are alike.
Those differences help in hand's functions.
If the fingers were similar, could we hold things?
[Diversity is] good for work. --Mankuthimma

Settlement
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆನ್ನೆಲ್ಲೊ ಚೆನ್ನೆನುತೆಣಿಸಿ ।
ಹುಲ್ಲುಬಯಲೊಂದೆಡೆಯಿನೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ನೆಗೆದು ।।
ಮೆಲ್ಲದೆಯೆ ಧಾವಿಸುತ ದಣಿವ ಕರುವನು ಪೋಲ್ತೊ ।
ಡೆಲ್ಲಿಯೊ ಸುಖ ನಿನಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Like a calf that runs helter-skelter
From one green field to another,
Without browsing anywhere; if you are,
Whither contentment for you? --Mankuthimma

Living in the present
ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಮುನ್ನರಿಯುವುದೆ ತನ್ನ ಪಯಣದ ತೆರನ ।
ಇಕ್ಕುವರಾರದನು ಕರೆದು ತಿರುಪೆಯನು ।।
ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಪೋದಂತಲೆದು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದುದನುಣ್ಣುವುದು ।
ತಕ್ಕುದಾ ವ್ರತ ನಿನಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Does the bird know ahead about its sojourn?
Who is there to feed grain for it either?
It goes where its wings take; it eats what it finds.
It is a good way to live. --Mankuthimma

Art of living
ಜೀವನವದೊಂದು ಕಲೆ ಕಲೆಯ ಕಲಿಸುವುದೆಂತು ।
ಸಾವಿರದ ನಿಯಮ ಯುಕ್ತಿಗಳನೊರೆದೊಡೆಯುಂ ।।
ಆವುದೋ ಕುಶಲತೆಯದೊಂದಿರದೆ ಜಯವಿರದು ।
ಆ ವಿವರ ನಿನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Living is an art; how can art be taught?
Even after giving myriad rules and tricks,
In the absence of wit, success departs.
Its details are within you. --Mankuthimma

Tree
ಪರಹಿತದ ಮಾತಿರಲಿ ಪರರಿನೇ ಜೀವಿಪನು ।
ನರಜಂತು ಪಶುಪಕ್ಷಿಕೀಟಮೀನ್ಗಳವೋಲ್ ।।
ಪರರಿನೆಳಸದದೇನುನುಂಪರರಿಗುಪಕರಿಪ ।
ತರುಜನ್ಮವಲ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Let alone helping others; man lives because of them,
Just like animals, birds, insects and fish.
It asks for nothing, but helps all a great deal--
Isn't it blessed to be born a tree? --Mankuthimma

Guru
ಬೀಳಿಸದಿರೊ ನಿನ್ನ ನೆರಳನಿತರರ ಮೇಲೆ ।
ಬಾಳಿಕೊಳುವವರು ತಂತಮ್ಮ ಬೆಳಕಿನಲಿ ।।
ಮೇಲುಬೀಳುಗಳಾರ್ಗದೆಂತೊ ನೀನೇನರಿವೆ ।
ತಾಳದಿರು ಗುರುತನವ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Cast not your shadow upon others;
Let them live under their own lights.
What do you know about their life's turns?
Try not to be a guru. --Mankuthimma

Deep meditation
ಹಿಂದಣದರುಳಿವಿರದು ಮುಂದಣದರುಸಿರಿರದು ।
ಒಂದರೆಕ್ಷಣ ತುಂಬಿ ತೋರುವುದನಂತ ।।
ಒಂದೆ ಕಣ್ಣೊಂದೆ ಗುರಿಯೊಂದೆ ಮೈಮನಮರೆತ ।
ಸುಂದರದ ಲೋಕವದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Past ceases to exist, and there is no trace of the future;
In one moment, one sees all of eternity.
One sight, one destiny; body and mind become one too.
It is a beautiful world in itself. --Mankuthimma

Harmony
ಶುಭವಾವುದಶುಭವಾವುದು ಲೋಕದಲಿ ನೋಡೆ ।
ವಿಭಜಿಸಲ್ಕಾಗದನ್ಯೋನ್ಯ ಸಂಬಂಧ ।।
ಉಭಯವನು ಮೀರ್ದ ಸಾಮ್ಯದ ನೀತಿಯೊಂದಿಹುದು ।
ಅಭಯಪಥವದು ನಿನಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

If you try to divide the world into good and bad,
You will uncover a tight bond that unites them both.
There is a principle of harmony that is beyond them,
That is the path for living. --Mankuthimma

Beyond suns
ಭಾನೂದಯಾಸ್ತಗಳಿನಲ್ತೆ ದಿಕ್ಕಾಲಗಳ ।
ಮಾನಗಣಿತವು ನಮಗೆ ಭಾನುವಿರದೊಡದೇಂ ।।
ಆನಂತ್ಯ ಶುದ್ಧಸತ್ತಾ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬೊಮ್ಮನದು ।
ಲೀನನಾಗದರೊಳಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Isn't the rise and setting of Sun our metric
Of time and direction? What if there is no Sun?
The eternal, pure essence [beyond suns] is Brahman.
Be one with that. --Mankuthimma

World peace
ಜಾನಪದ ಶಿಷ್ಟಿಯಲಿ ಸಂಪತ್ಸಮಷ್ಟಿಯಲಿ ।
ಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಂಧಾನದಲಿ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಗಣನೆಯಲಿ ।।
ಮಾನವತೆ ಮಾನುಷ್ಯ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕತೆಯೆದ್ದುನಿಲೆ ।
ಆನಂದ ಧರೆಗಂದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Discipline among people; equal sharing of wealth;
Knowledge for peace; value-based calculations;
Humanity and cooperation --if all these flourish,
The world will be full of happiness. --Mankuthimma

Change
ಬಲುಹಳೆಯ ಲೋಕವಿದು ಬಲುಪುರಾತನ ಲೋಕ ।
ಬೆಳೆದಿರ್ಪುದಿದು ಕೋಟಿ ರಸಗಳನು ಪೀರ್ದು ।।
ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲದರ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನು ಮಾರ್ಪಡಿಸೆ ।
ಸಲದಾತುರತೆಯದಕೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

This is a very old world, an ancient world;
It has grown absorbing myriad tastes.
Not easy is it to change its character.
It detests haste. --Mankuthimma

ಒಡೆಯದಿರು ತಳಹದಿಯ ಸರಿವಡಿಪೆನದನೆಂದು ।
ಸಡಿಲಿಸುವ ನೀಂ ಮರಳಿ ಕಟ್ಟಲರಿತವನೇಂ ।।
ಗಿಡವ ಸರಿ ಬೆಳೆಯಿಸಲು ಬುಡವ ಕೀಳ್ವುದು ಸರಿಯೆ ।
ದುಡುಕದಿರು ತಿದ್ದಿಕೆಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Do not destroy the foundation in trying to set something right.
Although eager to loosen up, do you know how to build it back?
Is it right to pull apart its stem to make a plant grow correctly?
Do not be hasty in correcting. --Mankuthimma

Help
ಬಳಲಿ ನೆಲದಲಿ ಮಲಗಿ ಮೈಮರೆತು ನಿದ್ರಿಪನ ।
ಕುಲುಕಿ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯನರಸೆನುವುದುಪಕೃತಿಯೆ ।।
ಒಳಿತನೆಸಗುವೆನೆಂದು ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ ನುಂಗದಿರು ।
ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲೊಳಿತೆಸಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Is it help if you shake up someone asleep on the ground,
Tired and weary, and ask him to find a bed for himself?
In trying to be benevolent, do not ruin existent harmony.
It is not easy to do something good. --Mankuthimma

 Forbearance
ಒಮ್ಮನಸಿನಿಂದ ನೀನೀ ತತ್ತ್ವವಂ ಗ್ರಹಿಸು ।
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೀಲೆಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತುಗುರಿ ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲ ।।
ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರು ನಿನ್ನ ಪಾಡನು ಪಡುತ ತುಟಿ ಬಿಗಿದು ।
ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಗೆ ದಾರಿಯಿದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Concentrate and understand this truth:
There is no purpose or meaning in God's play.
Keep mum and endure your life as it comes;
This is the way to peace. --Mankuthimma

Eating
ಅನ್ನವುಣುವಂದು ಕೇಳ್ ಅದನು ಬೇಯಿಸಿದ ನೀರ್ ।
ನಿನ್ನ ದುಡಿತದ ಬೆಮರೊ ಪೆರರ ಕಣ್ಣೀರೋ ।।
ತಿನ್ನು ನೀಂ ಜಗಕೆ ತಿನಲಿತ್ತನಿತ ಮಿಕ್ಕೂಟ ।
ಜೀರ್ಣಿಸದ ಋಣಶೇಷ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

When you eat your daily rice, ask yourself on what cooked it:
Was it your own sweat, or was it someone else's tears?
Eat only as much as you gave the world to eat. The rest
Is undigestible leftover from your previous lives. --Mankuthimma

Postman
ನಲಿಸುವೊಲಿಸುವ ಕೆಣಕಿ ಕಾಡಿಸುವ ಮುಳಿಯಿಸುವ ।
ಕಳೆ ನಂಟು ಹಗೆ ಕಲಹ ಕುಹಕದೋಲೆಗಳಂ ।।
ಹಲಬರಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿ ಬಾರೆಂದು ವಿಧಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿಹ ।
ಇಳೆಯಂಚೆಯಾಳು ನೀಂ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A happy mail for one while a hurting post to another,
Letters of friendship, jealousy, hatred and mockery:
All these are given to you to be delivered by Fate.
You are just a postman. --Mankuthimma

Spread not sorrows
ತಲೆಪಾಗಿನೊಳಕೊಳಕ ಪಂಚೆನಿರಯೊಳಹರಕ ।
ತಿಳಿಸುವೆಯ ರಜಕಗಲ್ಲದೆ ಲೋಗರಿಂಗೆ ।।
ಅಳಲುದುಗುಡಗಳ ನಿನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ಬಯ್ತಿಡದೆ ನೀ ।
ನಿಳೆಗೆ ಹರಡುವುದೇಕೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The dirt in your turban, the tear in your clothes:
You show these only to the washerman, not everyone.
Likewise, keep your sorrows and worries within yourself,
Why spread them to the world? --Mankuthimma

Human behaviour
ಗಾರೆಗಚ್ಚೇನಲ್ಲ ದಾರು ದೂಲಗಳಲ್ಲ ।
ಪಾರದ ದ್ರವದವೊಲು ಮನುಜಸ್ವಭಾವ ।।
ವೀರಶಪಥಗಳಿಂದೆ ಘನರೂಪಿಯಾಗದದು ।
ಸೈರಿಸದನಿನಿತು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

It is not set in concrete, nor is it like a wooden column.
On the other hand, human behaviour is very mercurial.
Just by brave vows it does not turn into a rigid solid;
Tolerate it a little. --Mankuthimma

 Tranquillity
ಕ್ಷಮೆ ದೋಷಿಗಳಲಿ ಕೆಚ್ಚೆದೆ ವಿಧಿಯ ಬಿರುಬಿನಲಿ ।
ಸಮತೆ ನಿರ್ಮತ್ಸರತೆ ಸೋಲ್ಗೆಲುವುಗಳಲಿ ।।
ಶಮವ ನೀಂ ಗಳಿಸಲೀ ನಾಲ್ಕು ತಪಗಳೆ ಸಾಕು ।
ಭ್ರಮೆಯೊ ಮಿಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ ತಪ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Mercy on the guilty, resilience amidst vagaries of Fate,
Equanimity in victory and loss, and lack of jealousy:
To gain shama [1], these four practices are enough.
Others are just fancies. --Mankuthimma


Life as yoga
ಬೇಕು ಜೀವನಯೋಗಕೊಂದು ಬಹುಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ।
ಬೇಕೊಂದು ಜಾಗರೂಕತೆ ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮತೆ ।।
ತಾಕನೊಂದನು ಯೋಗಿ ನೂಕನೊಂದನು ।
ಏಕಾಕಿ ಸಹವಾಸಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

The yoga of life needs a certain grasp of intricacies.
It needs carefulness; needs levelheadedness.
The yogi does not connect with anything, nor reject it.
He lives essentially alone. --Mankuthimma

Torn kite
ಸುತ್ತಿ ಸುತ್ತುವ ಖಗವ ಗೂಡ ನೆನಪೆಳೆಯುವುದು ।
ಗೊತ್ತುನೂಲ್ ಪಿಡಿದಿಹುದು ದನವ ಬಯಲಿನಲಿ ।।
ತತ್ತ್ವವೊಂದರ ಹಿಡಿತಕೊಗ್ಗದಿಹ ಬಾಳೇನು ।
ಕಿತ್ತ ಗಾಳಿಯ ಪಟವೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Even to a vagrant bird, the memory of nest pulls back.
A rope on the neck holds back the cow in the field.
What is life if not bound by any value?
It is like a torn kite. --Mankuthimma

Soul's debt
ಹತ್ಯೆಯೋ ಹನ್ಯತೆಯೊ ವಿಜಯವೋ ಪರಿಭವವೊ ।
ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯಂ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಮಂ ಗಣಿಸುವನೆ ರಣದೊಳ್ ।।
ಕೃತ್ಯನಿರ್ಣಯ ಬಾಹ್ಯಲಾಭನಷ್ಟದಿನಲ್ಲ ।
ಆತ್ಮಋಣವದು ಜಗಕೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

To kill or to be killed; victory or defeat:
The warrior does not think selfishly in battlefield.
What you do is not because of a rational sense of profit or loss;
It is what your soul owes to the world. --Mankuthimma


Laxity
ಎಲ್ಲಕಂ ನಿನಗಿಲ್ಲ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯದಧಿಕಾರ ।
ಇಲ್ಲದೆಯುಮಿಲ್ಲ ನಿನಗಾ ಹೊರೆಯ ಪಾಲು ।।
ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಾದಿನಿತ ಮಿಕ್ಕುದು ಪಾಲಿಗನ ಪಾಡು ।
ಒಲ್ಲನವನರೆನಚ್ಚ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

You do not have authority to do everything.
But then, it's not that you have no burden of work.
Do what you can, leave the rest to Him.
He does not like sloppiness [in what you do]. --Mankuthimma

Devotion
ದೇವರದಿದೆಲ್ಲ ದೇವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲವೆಂದೊರಲು- ।
ತಾವುದನುಮವನ ನಿರ್ಣಯಕೆ ಬಿಡದೆಯೆ ತಾಂ ।।
ದಾವನ್ತಪಡುತ ತನ್ನಿಚ್ಛೆಯನೆ ಘೋಷಿಸುವ ।
ಭಾವವೆಂತಹ ಭಕುತಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

"All this is God's, all this is for Him":
Even while saying so, not leaving anything to His judgement,
But agitating oneself and trumpeting one's own wishes --
What sort of devotion is this? --Mankuthimma

Negativism
ಸರಿಯಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲವದು ಸರಿಯಿದಲ್ಲವೆನುತ ।
ಹರಡಿಕೊಳಬೇಡ ಮುಳ್ಳನು ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯಲಿ ।।
ಕೊರೆಯಾದೊಡೇನೊಂದು ನೆರೆದೊಡೇನಿನ್ನೊಂದು ।
ಒರಟು ಕೆಲಸವೊ ಬದುಕು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

"This is not right, that is not correct":
Saying thus, spread not thorns on your bed.
So what if something is not perfect?
Life is but a rough job. --Mankuthimma

Tricky secret
ಪ್ರಾಕ್ತನದ ವಾಸನೆಯೆ ಮನಕೆ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ।
ಯುಕ್ತಿಗಳ ತನಗೊಪ್ಪುವಂತೆ ತಿರುಗಿಪುದು ।।
ಸೂಕ್ತವೆನಿಪುದು ಸಹಜರುಚಿ ತನ್ನ ತರ್ಕವನೆ ।
ಗುಪ್ತದೊಳು ಕುಟಿಲವಿದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

One's past [1] is the mind's first counsel.
It twists the truths as it sees fit.
One's nature always argues that it is correct. 
This is a tricky secret. --Mankuthimma


One's World
ನಿನ್ನ ಕಣ್ ಕಿವಿ ಮನಗಳರಿವಷ್ಟು ನಿನ್ನ ಜಗ ।
ನಿನ್ನನಳಿಸುವ ನಗಿಸುವೆಲ್ಲ ನಿನ್ನಂಶ ।।
ಉನ್ನತಿಗೆ ನೀನೇರಿದಂತೆ ಜಗ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿ ।
ಸಣ್ಣತನ ಸವೆಯುವುದು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Your world is what your eyes, ears and mind perceive. 
What makes you sad or happy is part of your own self.
As you rise higher and higher, the world broadens,
And small-mindedness goes away. --Mankuthimma


Lonely path
ಪಿರಿದೆಲ್ಲ ಮತನೀತಿಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಜೀವಿತವು ।
ನೆರೆಬಂದ ನದಿ ದಡಕೆ ಬಾಗಿ ಪರಿಯುವುದೇಂ ।।
ಧರುಮಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮದ ತಿಳಿವೆ ಲೋಕಸೂತ್ರದ ಸುಳಿವು ।
ಅರಸು ಜೀವಿತ ಹಿತವ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Life is greater than all religions and truths.
Can a river in spate respect its banks?
The essence of religion is generic principles;
You [alone have to] seek what is good for you. --Mankuthimma

Divine grace
ಗಗನ ಬಿಸಿಗವಸಾಗಿ ಕೆರೆಗಳಾವಿಗೆಯಾಗಿ ।
ಜಗದುಸಿರೆ ಹೊಗೆಯಾಗಿ ಧಗಧಗಿಸುವಂದು ।।
ಒಗೆದೆತ್ತಣಿನೊ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲಿ ಧರೆಗೆ ತಂಪೆರೆವ ।
ಮುಗಿಲವೊಳು ದೈವಕೃಪೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

When sky is a hot blanket, when parched soil seems like potter's kiln,
When blowing wind feels like billowing smoke, when all is ablaze in heat and drought:
One night from somewhere clouds arrive and rain the earth.
Such is the nature of divine grace. --Mankuthimma


Perennial devotion
ಯುಕ್ತಿಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಬಡ ಪರದೇಶಿ ।
ಶಕ್ತಿ ಚತುರತೆಯುಡುಗಿ ನೀನು ಸೋತಂದು ।।
ಉತ್ಕ್ರಮಣದರೆಮನದಿ ದೈವವನು ಪಿಡಿದೇನು ।
ಭಕ್ತಿ ರಕ್ತದಿ ಪರಿಗೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

In the kingdom of intellect, devotion is a poor refugee.
One day when your brains and energy wane, and you weaken,
Lying on the death bed, half-awake, what use is calling on God?
Let piety flow in your blood. --Mankuthimma

Indulgent pleasures
ಮಿಡಿಚೇಪೆಕಾಯಿಗಳ ತಡಬಡದೆ ನುಂಗುವುದು ।
ಕಡಿಯೆ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲಿ ಹರಳೆಣ್ಣೆ ಕುಡಿಯುವುದು ।।
ಬಿಡುತಿರಲು ನೋವಾಗ ಸುಖವೀಗಳೆನ್ನುವುದು ।
ಪೊಡವಿಗಿದೆ ಭೋಗವಿಧಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

To feast on raw mangoes, and then,
When the stomach is upset, to drink oil [1];
As pain subsides, to delight in the relief:
This is the way of indulgence. --Mankuthimma


Cycle of progress
ಗಿರಿಯ ಮೇಲಕೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬಂಡೆಯನು ಸಿಸಿಫಸನು ।
ಉರುಳಿಸಿರಲೊಂದೆರಡು ಮಾರು ಘಾಸಿಯಲಿ ।।
ಸರಿದು ಕೆಳಕದದೆಂತೊ ಜಾರುವುದು ಮರಮರಳಿ ।
ಪುರುಷಪ್ರಗತಿಯಂತು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Sisyphus [1] pushes a boulder to the top of hill,
With a lot of effort and injuring himself in doing so.
But somehow it slips and falls down every time.
Likewise is our progress. --Mankuthimma

Virtue and sin
ಪುಣ್ಯದಿಂ ಬಂದ ಸಿರಿ ಮದಮೋಹಗಳ ಮೂಲ ।
ಖಿನ್ನನಾಗಿಪ ಪಾಪಫಲವಾತ್ಮಶುದ್ಧಿ ।।
ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಜನಕಗಳು ಪುಣ್ಯಪಾಪಗಳಿಂತು ।
ಧನ್ಯನುಭಯವ ಮೀರೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Wealth that comes out of one's virtues leads to attachment and vanity.
But sorrow that arises out of one's sins cleanses one's soul.
Thus virtue and sin give birth to each other;
Blessed is he who rises above them both. --Mankuthimma

Devious way
ಸುರಪಸಭೆಯಲಿ ಗಾಧಿಸುತ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ।
ಧರೆಯೊಳದರಿಂ ಹರಿಶ್ಚಂದ್ರಂಗೆ ತಪನೆ ।।
ಬರುವುದಿಂತೆತ್ತಣಿನೊ ಬೇಡದ ಪ್ರಾರಬ್ಧ ।
ಕರುಮಗತಿ ಕೃತ್ರಿಮವೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

A contest in Indra's celestial court between Viswamitra and Vasishta,
Led to a lot of misery to Harischandra on Earth. 
Unwanted distress can come suddenly from somewhere:
The way of Karma is devious indeed. --Mankuthimma


Individualism
ಹರಡುವುದು ಸಾಜ ವಾಯುಗೆ ಸೈಸದದು ತಡೆಯನ್ ।
ಉರುಳಿಪುದದೆಲ್ಲವನು ತಡೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದಿರೆ ।।
ನರನ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರಗತಿಯಂತು ಹಿತಮಿತವಿರಲು ।
ಅರಸೊ ಮಿತಿಯಾಯತಿಯ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

It is natural for wind to blow, it does not tolerate blockage.
But when there is nothing to stop it, it destroys everything.
Such is the nature of individual freedom. It is good if it is
In moderation. Try to limit your independence. --Mankuthimma

Enlightened
ದ್ವೈತವೇನದ್ವೈತವೇನಾತ್ಮದರ್ಶನಿಗೆ ।
ಶ್ರೌತಾದಿವಿಧಿಯೇನು ತಪನಿಯಮವೇನು ।।
ನೀತಿ ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮಮತಿಯನದರಿನಮಿತ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ।
ಭೀತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದನವನು ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

What is dualism and non-dualism for the enlightened?
Why rituals, why rules, why meditation?
He is one with all souls, and full of love in his heart.
Fear is unknown to him. --Mankuthimma

Life force
ಬಾನೊಳಿರುವುದೆ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಪಾರ್ವ ದಾರಿಯ ನಕ್ಷೆ ।
ಮೀನು ನೀರೊಳು ನುಸುಳೆ ಪಥನಿಯಮವಹುದೆ ।।
ಏನೊ ಜೀವವನೆಳೆವುದೇನೊ ನೂಕುವುದದನು ।
ನೀನೊಂದು ಗಾಳಿಪಟ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Does the sky have a map for the migrating bird?
Do rules exist for a fish that swims about in water?
Something tugs at life, and pushes it forward:
You are but a flying kite. --Mankuthimma

Resilience
ಎಡವದೆಯೆ ಮೈಗಾಯವಡೆಯದೆಯೆ ಮಗುವಾರು ।
ನಡೆಯ ಕಲಿತವನು ಮತಿನೀತಿಗತಿಯಂತು ।।
ತಡವರಿಸಿ ಮುಗ್ಗರಿಸಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಮತ್ತೆದ್ದು ಮೈ- ।
ದಡವಿಕೊಳುವವರೆಲ್ಲ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Which child learnt to walk without falling down?
This is how the mind learns wisdom too.
To slip, to fall, and to shake oneself and get up:
Isn't this what everyone does? --Mankuthimma

Relationships
ತಂದೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟುದನು ಕಾಣೆಯಾ ।
ಹೊಂದಿರವರವರಹಂತೆಯು ಮೊಳೆಯುವನಕ ।।
ತಂದೆಯಾರ್ ಮಕ್ಕಳಾರ್ ನಾನೆಂಬುದೆದ್ದುನಿಲೆ ।
ಬಂಧ ಮುರಿವುದು ಬಳಿಕ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

Have you seen rift between parents and children?
They live in harmony until self-importance takes over.
What of father and what of son, when ego reigns?
Then, the relationship is blighted. --Mankuthimma

Hunger
ಉದರದೈವಕೆ ಜಗದೊಳೆದುರು ದೈವವದೆಲ್ಲಿ ।
ಮೊದಲದರ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಿಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲವದರಿಂದ ।।
ಮದಿಸುವುದದಾದರಿಸೆ ಕುದಿವುದು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸೆ ।
ಹದದೊಳಿರಿಸುವುದೆಂತೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

What God in this world is greater than the Stomach God?
It has to get the first worship; others come afterwards.
If you respect it, it takes over you. If you ignore it, it seethes with rage.
How to keep it at bay? I know not. --Mankuthimma

Withdrawal
ಮನೆಯ ತೊರೆದೋಡಲೇಂ ವನಗುಹೆಯ ಸಾರಲೇಂ ।
ತನುವನುಗ್ರವ್ರತಗಳಿಂದ ದಂಡಿಸಲೇಂ ।।
ಬಿನದಗಳನರಸಿ ನೀನೂರೂರೊಳಲೆದೊಡೇಂ ।
ಮನವ ತೊರೆದಿರಲಹುದೆ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

So what if you leave your home, and go to a forest cave?
What if you punish your body with severe penance?
What if you roam from place to place seeking diversion?
Can you withdraw from your mind? --Mankuthimma

Causality
ಗಗನನೀಲಿಮೆಯೆನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಗೆ ಸೊಗವೀವಂತೆ ।
ಮುಗಿವ ತರಣಿಯ ರಕ್ತ ಹಿತವೆನಿಸದೇಕೊ ।।
ಸೊಗದ ಮೂಲವದೆಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಲದೊಳೊ ಕೆಂಪಿನೊಳೊ ।
ಬಗೆವೆನ್ನ ಮನಸಿನೊಳೊ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ।।

I am delighted with the azure blue of the sky,
But its evening red does not please me much.
Is the cause of my sensation in blue? Or red?
Or is it in my mind that felt it? --Mankuthimma

Immortality
ಹುಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಸಾಯುತಿರೆ ನೆಲ ಸವೆದು ಕರಗುತಿರೆ ।
ಕಡಲೊಳೆತ್ತಲೋ ಹೊಸ ದ್ವೀಪವೇಳುವುದು ।।

Dr. Sree Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji(The Walking God)

Dr. Sree Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji (ಡಾ. ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿ) (born April 1, 1907) is the present head of Sree Siddaganga Mutt in Tumkur District, South India and founder of the Sree Siddaganga Education Society. He was initiated into viraktashram order in 1930. Swamiji was born in Veerapura near Magadi Taluk. He studied English in college and is proficient in Kannada and Sanskrit. He has established educational institutions which offer a courses in traditional learning of Sanskrit as well as modern science and technology. He is widely respected for his philanthropic work by all communities.In recognition of his humanitarian work, Sree Swamiji was conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature by Karnatak University in 1965. He continues his humanitarian work even at the age of 104.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

He was born on April 1, 1908, in Veerapura, a tiny Village in Magadi Taluk, Bangalore District, Karnataka, India. The village in fact is surrounded by all holy places, full of sacred hills & caves - an enchanting environment. Born to very religiously-minded, devotional parents, Sree Honnappa and Gangamma, they had 13 children - 8 male and 5 female. He was the youngest among the males, named Shivanna who later became, Sree Sivakumara Swamiji and took reins of the Sree Siddaganga Mutt.

He imbibed his father's qualities and always desired to follow them with devotion. His mother in fact had identified in his childhood the characteristics of a shining persona and a human being who would be a cause for total change and would one day be considered a deity.

EDUCATION

He had his primary schooling in his village and from 7th grade to 10th grade in Tumkur, now a district headquarter. In 1926 he passed the entrance examination and joined Central College in Bangalore and completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1930, with Physics and Mathematics as Optional Subjects. This was especially noted because at that time India was ruled by the British, and very few had the opportunity to achieve higher education like this.

But this boy, even though not from a very rich and prominent family, has known the importance of education and since his childhood days was very attracted to religious theme and Sanyasa (Sanyasa means leaving all worldly comforts and living like a sage He will not get marry he will not have any bonding with any body) and knew from early on that he wanted to do something to better society….


VIRAKTHASHRAM (ADOPTING A Monk’s LIFE)

A defining moments of his life that made him a Seer (head) of SREE SIDDAGANGA MUTT by adopting Sanyasa are two occasion during his college life…

In 1926, when he completed his 12th grade, for a short period of 4 months he was a resident student of Sree Siddaganga Mutt, and received spiritual blessings of Sree Uddana Shivayogigalu (His Guru) who was head of the Mutt then.

While he was studying at the Central College, Bangalore, a tragedy struck. On January 16th, 1930, he heard the heartbreaking news of death of his close friend Sri Marularadhya at Siddaganga Mutt, who would have been the next head of the Mutt. With a heavy heart, he completed the last rites of Sree Marularadhya.

When Sri Shivanna was attending the last rites to be performed at the Samadhi (tomb) of Sri Marularadhya, Sree Uddana Shivayogigalu announced that Sri Shivanna will going shoulder the responsibility by becoming the successor to the Mutt and Sri Shivanna was told to be a representative of Sree Siddalingeshwara (The God) to carry forward the work of the this Sacred place. He blessed him by touching his head. Sri Shivanna accepted the divine role offered to him by his Guru, attiring himself in the Saffron costume of a Virakta (monk/Arch Bishop) in the true spirit and tradition of Veerasaivism (a sub sect of Hindu religion). He was renamed as "Sree Sivakumara Swamiji". Swamiji is a title given to those who take up monk. Like bishop in Christianity


He was formally initiated into the holy order as a successor on March 3rd 1930 and thus he joined the generation of sages.


SHOCK TO HIS PARENTS

On hearing this sacred news, of his being made as the successor to head Sree Siddaganga Mutt, his teachers and mates showered their wishes upon Sree Sivakumara Swamiji to wish him success in his chosen path. However, it was a rude shock to his father, who had chalked out a life of a high ranked official. But destiny had something in store for Sree Sivakumara Swamiji, and this son would never return to that subjective world, which every parent wishes for their children. He tried to persuade his son to change his decision, but he was rock solid in his decision and he would never change the Almighty's wish that he enter into a life of a sage towards a new path that is not for one family, but to serve the entire world as his family as in Sanskrit it is said: "Vasudaiva Kutumbakam".



 


HIS LONG JOURNEY OF SERVING HUMANITY.

Thus it began in the year 1937. First He upgraded a small Sanskrit School of the Mutt into a Sanskrit College. It began offering degree courses in Logic and Grammar, Linguistics and Literatures and admitted students from all castes and communities.

By providing "Dasoha" (free food), the school continued to grow with his student wealth increasing day in day out.

Then he had another shock when his GURU Sree Uddana Shivayogi, who was the inspiration and support for all his deeds, breathed his last breath on January 11, 1941.

Now that he was the sole head of the Mutt, his responsibilities increased vastly. There was a serious dearth of financial resources, and what he had in hand was just Rs. 300/- , But he didn’t lose heart; he continued his mission. His motto of work is worship, love and compassion started increasing in him day by day. It started spreading throughout the length and breadth of the state like a miracle, and donations started pouring in, the balance sheet of income and expenditures started bulging.

He expanded the Dasoha (free food), Sanskrit College, and the construction of new hostels for the students. There are hundreds of incidents that have been narrated about how poor and rich alike thronged to the Mutt and made their contributions without any return expectations.

Now this is what I was telling you in the beginning, the God will come in the form of Man…… many feel this situation has been realized here…. once depleting financing conditions and dire circumstances bean improving, Sree Sivakumara Swamiji found that his inner self confidence was his great treasure.

His journey continued persistently - it marched forward against all odds.

At present the number of children who are given the facility of food, shelter and schooling is around 8000. The Mutt takes in about 2000 visitors per day.

REALIZATION OF HIS DREAM

As he visualized, the students who have studied under the benevolent shelter of the Mutt have now occupy respectable and high profile positions in Government, Public, Private Sectors and Educational Institutions. To get themselves actively involved in all the functions and activities the Old Students of the Mutt, with the gracious consent of their Guru, formed an "Old Students' Association" in the year 1954. At the request of the students, Sree Sivakumara Swamiji has been its guiding spirit as its President. The Association volunteers to take up the entire responsibility to organize any program at the Mutt, and they are in turn giving back to society what they themselves received in kind from it - and this was the main concept of Sree Sivakumara Swamiji

HIS LIFE AT 100 YEARS

Sree Sivakumara Swamiji is now 100+  years of age. People say that although he has shed tears for the world, they have not affected his eyes, which are bright and with sharp with vision. He meticulously maintains his routine and attends programs on schedule.

He attributes his good health to his food and his life style.

His meal intake is very scientific. Foods with sourness, spices or with hot chili powder, and fried items are not to his liking. He keeps them away from his pan. He takes his curry made out of Green Gram dal (Pulses) with a pinch of salt.

He walks without support, and very agile and brisk in his steps.

He climbs stairs without an iota of tiredness in his body or legs. His hearing is sharp and he talks in low tones. People are accustomed to his exceedingly poised gestures.

For him the day begins in the early morning at 2:30 am. Sree Sivakumara Swamiji maintains a diary and records his appointments and work himself. After completing morning chores and taking bath he sits for performing pooja (kind of prayer with some rituals which every Hindu does) which finishes by 5:30 or 6 am. Immediately he then attends to his office and receives visitors and devotees. He goes through his diary to look at which programs to attend for the day, and finishes pending files. If the newspapers have already arrived he will also go through them.

Sree Sivakumara Swamiji still engages classes for SSLC and PUC students, teaching the subjects of English and Sanskrit. He has been in this routine of teaching classes for the last 60-65 years.  

Then he returns to his office, then to the kitchen to confer with the workers, and then back to office to see to the day's mail and give dictations and distributes the mail to different sections and offices. He works without break from 2.00 am until 2.30pm. He’ll take his lunch and then make trips to the buildings around the Mutt or go to fields and gardens. By evening around 6pm he gets ready to be present for the mass prayer conducted every day with all the guests of the Mutt Hostels, and that is a site to watch. He still makes visits to dining halls to make inquiries of the students. Returning to his office, he does more paperwork until 9 pm. He finally goes to bed around 11 pm, and the very next day the routine begins again at 2:00am.

AWARDS & REWARDS

As a sage, he does not expect anything from anybody, but it is the satisfaction of the people who love him and who worship him that rewards him just by acknowledging his effort.

In the year 1965, he was granted an Honorary "Doctor of Letters" Degree by Karnataka University.

The prestigious "Karnataka Ratna" award for 2006 was conferred upon His Holiness Dr. Sree Sivakumara Swamiji in recognition of his yeoman services for promoting education in the state.

The state Govt. has proposed his name for ‘BHARAT RATNA” award also.

Now he has lit the candle of educating poor rural children and making them asset to this nation. His one remaining dream is that this effort and vision should be carried forward to further distances.
